Bethany: Part XII

Bethany: Part XII

Sex is a part of nature, after all, so I guess it shouldn’t be that surprising that its consummation often depends on the weather. Bethany and I had gone about as far as two people could without progressing to the actual act, more out of problematic logistics than any reluctance on either of our parts. Even in a house as enormous as Bethany’s, it’s hard to find privacy when surrounded by nine inquisitive siblings and two protective parents. As for my place, the family may have been far smaller but the house was too. I’d discovered in the past that my parents’ Ford LTD was roomy enough to accommodate most anything, but I think Bethany and I both felt that such a setting lacked the gravitas her long deferred defloration demanded.

But I needn’t have worried because, as usual, Bethany had planned everything out. One evening she suggested that, rather than embarking on our usual cross-cultural field trip, we head over to Pitt Prep. We snuck into the girls dorm to "party" with a couple of her boarder friends, a less than decadent event which featured Cheez Whiz on crackers and a lot of giggling. We didn’t stay that long, and soon crept back down the fire escape and into a fine spring night, alive with the budding charms of our sylvan campus, which for once looked very like the one pictured in the brochures.

"I thought maybe we could have a – uh – picnic," Bethany said as she retrieved the large canvas bag she’d stowed in the trunk of my car.

"Sure, sure, great idea." We walked hand in hand in silence, slowly descending the long hill that led to the gym.

"D – d – do you . . . " she finally stuttered, "know some place we could be, ah, alone?"

"Ah . . . " I said, almost blurting out Oh, I get it. "Yeah, yeah, I know just the place."

She was asking the right guy. I’ve always had a knack for finding what I call the empty places. Anywhere that retains even the slightest trace of wildness contains hidden spaces obscured from the view of formal society, pockets of freedom, gaps in the landscape where people go to do all the things that our culture doesn’t like to admit people do – the ancient remedies of drink, drugs and sex. In a primitive society the universal urge to break taboos was recognized by having certain sacred times and places where proscribed, antisocial activities were permitted and even sacralized. Today they’re pushed to the fringes, to the empty places. Even as a boy in an unfamiliar park I could unerringly push my way through a seemingly impassable path to discover a secluded spot of tramped down dirt, littered with cigarette butts, empty beer cans and used rubbers, somewhere where teenagers and other outlaws had celebrated their bacchanals for generations, an ability that came in handy when I, under the tutelage of that Maenad Heather, started attending the rites myself.

On our campus the prime empty space was in the middle of the cross country course. The course was a long strip of land between Fox Chapel Road and the golf course with a line of trees down the center, the idea being that the runners would run up one side, around the far end and continue back on the other side. At Spartan Pitt Prep running the cross country course was considered an extremely salutary activity for any young person, and since involvement in athletics was mandatory it was every student’s fate to spend large portions of their life chugging up and down that damn path.

But, of course, there are ways in the world to get around, or in this case though most everything. The tree line was thick enough, a strip of the old forest that hadn’t been cleared, but it wasn’t impenetrable, and since our musclebound gym teachers didn’t care to undertake the beneficial exercise themselves, the wily and daring malcontent would duck in among the trunks and linger there until the pack finally returned in the other direction, conveniently enough in about the time it took to share a joint, certainly raising spirits for the brief sprint back to the gym. The best place for this respite was a propitious bulge in the tree line, far enough to avoid casual monitoring but close enough to make the most burdensome portion of the running unnecessary.

Located within this bulge was the primo Pitt Prep empty space, maintained by the stoners and malcontents with a vigor they applied to little else. Within a natural enclosure ringed by thick undergrowth and sheltered by hanging boughs were a couple of those chairs with desks on the arms from the classrooms, a few folding chairs from the gym bleachers, a vinyl gymnastics mat, an official Pitt Prep trash can and even, for mood lighting, an assortment of candles in glass holders liberated from many of Pittsburgh’s finest restaurants. Over time the place had grown from a casual rest stop into a general sanctuary, availably day and night to those wishing to escape the censorious gaze of our overseers and their fellow traveling student Quislings.

"Wow." Of course Bethany, ever dedicated to staying the course, saw it for the first time that night. "So this is where you guys go."

"Yes."

"And you’ve been here before."

"Yes, many times," I said unthinkingly before catching the stern flash of her eyes. "But never like this. Never with a girl."

"Really? Not even Heather?" It was the first time she’d mentioned Heather, or indeed any of the others, including our one mutual friend, Virginia.

"No. Hanging out with other people, maybe, but not like this," I lied. "Not just the two of us."

"Hmmm." She hummed doubtfully, but her plan was already too far advanced, and she busied herself with emptying the bag of its contents – a large plaid blanket, a bottle of Hungarian Tokay and a single rubber.

"You underestimate me, my dear," I said. "You’re lucky I brought reinforcements."

"What?" she asked coloring. "Did I do something wrong?"

"No, not at all, everything’s great, it’s wonderful." I picked up the bottle. "I don’t suppose you brought a corkscrew?"

"No, darn it, I didn’t think of it." And how could she, unfamiliar as she was with stimulants – I’d never even seen a sip of coffee pass her lips much less alcohol. But she was deeply embarrassed at the failure of her fabled competence, blushing even more deeply, her long, crooked nose staying inexplicably pale.

"Oh, Bethany, that doesn’t matter either. Come on, just relax, we don’t need all that. Come here, everything’s going to be all right." I took her in my arms and very soon we’d left all embarrassment behind.

Although at the time it was the farthest thing from my mind, due to the Arcadian nature of the proceedings, years later when I came across these lines from Guido Cavalcanti’s In a Small Grove I met a Little Shepherdess I immediately thought of Bethany and that night:

She took me by the hand with amorous desire,

And said she had given me her heart:

She led me beneath branches of cool leaves

Where I saw flowers of every color,

And there I felt such joy and sweetness

That the god of Love – I seemed to see.

A Fan’s Guide to the Guide

It’s been unusually cold here – just below zero to just above – but you won’t find me among the grumblers, even though I walk half an hour to work (and another half hour home). Why? you ask. Well, simply because I am so splendidly equipped with a fine arsenal of frost fighting apparel. Just look at some of the items I’ve donned this past frigid week, a winning combination of modern technology and vintage military gear – one of those synthetic moisture wicking undershirts from MilTek, Swedish Army long underwear bottoms, Teflon coated thinsulate lined Dickies jeans, an authentic 1952 New Zealand Lamb’s wool shirt, British army cold weather issue, a flannel lined denim shirt, this futuristic ArticShield coat that’s amazingly light and warm, and a Dutch army fleece lined hat with flaps…to tell you the truth even at a couple of degrees I usually work up a sweat by the time I get here. (My Mother always used to say that cold weather is better than hot weather because you can always put more on but you can’t always take more off!) And I didn’t even mention my waterproof Georgia Boot camp shoes…and sure it’s no big thing for some dude to go to the outdoors store and pay hundreds for this kind of stuff, but that’s the beauty part, the thing that makes me grin as I strut so toasty and stylish down these mean streets…I got it all really cheap from my favorite catalogue The Sportsman’s Guide.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/

I know this sounds like spam by now, but believe me, it’s unsolicited testimony, straight from my warm heart. I suppose it’s because I was a little kid in the sixties, and always was fascinated by those Army/Navy stores and all this cool and durable ex-military clothes you could get for a song. The hippies always looked real boss in them and there was a great one in Pittsburgh, where I’m from. Over the years however that great tradition went down hill. The Army/Navy store here wasn’t that hot and slowly devolved into just another overpriced outdoor outfitter store, the few military things they had with ridiculous price tags as "collectibles." Besides U.S. army stuff is so standardized and blah now it’s not much fun. The Sportsmans Guide to the rescue. Not only do they scour the globe for real authentic surplus from the G.D.R., Norway, Italy, wherever and sell it cheap but they have neato clothing from regular manly U.S. manufacturers for a third of the usual price. Due to the strict inventory control made possible by computers, every retailer now uses the methods of grocery stores and the auto industry – if something doesn’t sell in a few weeks get rid of it, and even if it does sell roll out a new model with cosmetic differences frequently. This creates a huge backlog of returned and discontinued items that the manufacturer wants to get rid of ASAP in order to escape inventory taxes and storage costs – and this is just the stuff the Guide scoops up. I’ve also gotten once expensive items from brands whose attempt to crossover didn’t quite work, like Jeep jeans or Duck’s Head shoes. I had to laugh when my label conscious Sister-in-Law was telling me what a bargain her warm, durable boots were at $90, when a good pair could cost $150. Try $30 I said, and just because they don’t have this year’s buckles.

O.K., O.K., I admit I’m a little nutty of the subject of the Guide. I’m often dressed head to toe from within and my wife groans every time a new catalogue arrives. I guess she just doesn’t dig camouflage, even though I really wear a lot less than I used to. But where else can you find a camouflage acoustic guitar or pet bed? You know you’ve gotten a little carried away when you have your own favorite pattern of camo. Mine’s Tiger stripe, the kind preferred by the South Vietnamese special forces and the notoriously fierce South Korean army in ‘Nam. My runner-up would be that oversized op-art WW II Pacific camo often seen in John Wayne flicks. But to each his own…

Not that the Guide is perfect – it still disconcerts me when they ask if I want any ammunition when I make an order by telephone (quantities really are often limited), and the knives and authentic Nazi replica uniforms (now that stuff’s expensive) make me queasy, BUT it’s hard to argue with good, cheap and unusual, especially in a conspicuous consumption, brand name obsessed climate – or a cold one!

Flipping

So…I was idly channel flipping between the PISTONS (winning, as usual) and WOLVERINES (losing, as usual) basketball games (and, yes, I know these her newfangled televisions you can go directly from one channel to another BUT I’ve found that the flipping method leads to fewer simultaneous commercials and some happy accidents, O.K.?) when I came across the "news bloc" in the middle of the dial (if there was a dial). I must admit I only catch the BILL O’REILLY show by chance, and like all of Fox "news" I can only stand a small dose before a combination of laughter and nausea overcomes me, but really have you seen it lately? It’s geared for the grade school level – Bill opines, speaking slowly and clearly like a elementary school teacher, while on the right of the screen his simplistic pronouncements are printed in an even more simplistic form – LIBERALS BAD TRAITORS – like that same teacher chalking the keywords on a blackboard. Bill seemed particularly outraged that NBC news has finally started deviating from the BUSH party line, and actually presenting OTHER POINTS OF VIEW. He was upset that NBC and the WASHINGTON POST had presented a liberal and not clearly labeled him as such. Of course by the same token the words BIASED CONSERVATIVE DEMAGOGUE should scroll across the screen every time Bill’s mug appears.

It’s always been incredible to me that the most slanted network, Fox, is the one always accusing others of bias. The BUSH administration has admitted they do not favor a reality based view of the world, but would rather rely on Conservative "theory" and fundamentalist dogma, a stance that has led to their notable successes like IRAQ, the KATRINA RESPONSE, GLOBAL WARMING, and virtually EVERYTHING ELSE THEY’VE DONE! Like Soviet science, any time the real world does not conform to administration dogma the messenger delivering the real news is pilloried. For presenting the simple facts without the sort of 1984 semantics the Bush regime favors (it’s NOT a CIVIL WAR, O.K. – it’s outside agitators) news agencies are called traitors. BILL then moved on to his latest crusade, the startling, brave moral insight that CHILD MOLESTERS ARE BAD. This, of course, is something EVERYBODY can agree on, but since liberals don’t think accused child molesters should be instantly executed, they are accused of supporting them. Coming from a guy who said Shawn Hornbeck had "fun" being a captive of Michael Devlin and "liked" it because he did not have to go to school, it’s easy to see what a compassionate expert on the topic Bill is. I don’t need to point out that the conservatives have sunk to new lows in order to justify their point of view – they’re really desperate.

Then there’s KEITH OLBERMANN. My god, he’s talking normally, at the college level, not as if his audience are brain dead rabble who need to be whipped up. He just presents the facts , which in the Scooter Libby trial are more than enough to yet again damn the Bush/Cheney regime. There’s a reporter who was ACTUALLY AT THE TRIAL. What kind of news show is that? How refreshing, and how great that he’s gaining ground on the likes of Billy boy without pandering.

But let’s face it, the conservatives still don’t like to face reality, and a little thing like THE LAST ELECTION isn’t going to sway them. These great champions of "democracy" and "free speech" don’t actually support such things when they don’t go their way. That there are actually twenty-four percent of people in this country who support Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq demonstrates that there are a lot of lunatics out there who are completely out of touch with reality (hello, JOHN McCAIN), people who can still deliver a hearty cable audience to demagogues like O’Reilly. I know liberals are much more peace loving and inclusive but we’ve got to hoot down these hateful clowns whenever we can.

Or whenever we come across them while channel flipping – hey, there’s the Vinnie Pazienza/Greg Haugen fights on ESPN classic – now, that’s reality…

Two Bonus jokes

Two hardhitting jokes:

(this one really should be spoken:)

Two pieces of string are outside a bar. On the door of the bar is a sign saying NO STRING ALLOWED. But the first piece of string goes in anyway and says to the bartender "Gimme a beer." The bartender says "Are you a piece of string?" And the piece of string says yes and the bartender tells him to leave. So the first piece of string comes out and tells the other piece what happened. So the second pieces of string rolls around, unravels himself and ties himself up, then goes into the bar and tells the bartender he wants a beer. The bartender says "Are you a piece of string?" and he says "No, I’m a frayed knot!"

(pause for unrestrained laughter)

(my son told me this one)

Why is a pirate like a pimp?
Because they’re both always looking for booty and they both say "Yo, Ho!"

and here’s a super bonus third joke:

CRASH

TO THE UBU COMUNITY:

I remember when we first got a computer — rather late in the game (It’s still in the basement and still works — it’s still provides the crucial stage of UBUART even though it can only communicate with other computers through floppy discs — which is good probably as the internet just seems to rile up most systems) — and fell in love with the way it made it so easy to manipulate and juxtapose images, which in many ways to me is the essence of modern art — then it crashed, I lost everything and I learned the dark side of things — one of them being the way your slaved over creations can just disappear — poof — with no trace! In the old days at least you had drafts of a few tangible sheets of paper that were SOMEWHERE if they hadn’t been burned — but now — where do all those keystrokes go? Irretrievable I guess.

And then there’s fixing the damn things — half the time not even the greatest expert can tell you why the computer chose to screw up in the first place, why it couldn’t just do what it’s supposed to do or at least identify the part that wasn’t working — so you laboriously re-load just to have it crash again. Even if it does work out there’s so much guesswork and time wasted. But it’s taken UBUTHOUGHT from my basement to the WORLD and when old HAL is down I really miss him — even though his singing DAISY, DAISY… drives my crazy — not to mention the airlock thing.

Anyway my work computer is down — for the first time in my experience it’s (I think) hardware rather than software, but we’ll see. Since most creative goofing off should occur at work the pace and quality of our fine UBUPRODUCT may be compromised. Please be patient and bear with us during this difficult time.

Thanks for your special specialness,

UBU

Two Picture of Ellen

Two Pictures of Ellen

In the first picture Ellen’s self-sufficient, alone – one of only two new members, she’s younger than the rest and where they’re close, shoulders touching, she’s sitting apart, legs crossed, hands intertwined over one knee. The girl behind her, the Leader, is sitting on the old chair that’s always on the porch of the Craft Center, her leg sticking out so that there’s literally a foot between Ellen and the person next to her. Even though she’s at the far end of the bottom row, she steals the scene like she always does, and even with Annie Cutter leaning toward the camera, smiling with real Annie Cutter joy, your eye goes straight to Ellen with her sly grin, bare shoulders above a yellow sun dress, and brown feet in wooden Dr. Scholl’s sandals.

When the picture was taken, she must have already known she’d be the new Leader, but you can also see her sadness, lightly masked, to be so soon losing so many of the friends around her to graduation.

In the second picture what she’d imagined has become concrete – she’s physically and metaphysically at the center. Even though she’s the shortest, she dominates the photo, again in a sun dress and Dr. Scholl’s, her violet faced watch calling attention to the flawless skin of her arm and from there to the flawless skin all over her, the great gift of her smile at once warm and the most deadly deadpan, her short, fine black hair parted precisely in the middle of her forehead, shadowing her high, round cheekbones and those (half) Japanese eyes, her face almost that of a conventional American brunette beauty, but edged with the delicacy and exotic scale of the Japanese. Everyone around her looks so comfortable – there’s something about Ellen that makes the people she’s with feel like they’re part of a group, and not just any group but the right group – maybe that’s why she’s always surrounded by so many friends.

The Labyrinth Pans Out

Being a big Pan fan, I was geeked about the movie Pan’s Labyrinth from the first moment I heard about it, and for once a movie I was looking forward to didn’t let me down. I’ll skip the self-important faux review to just let loose with some of the phrases they use in ads like Fantastic, Moving, Brilliant or just plain Great. I brought the whole family and they all loved it, even my thirteen year old son who had to be dragged there and hates subtitles. I found the reviews I’d read kind of misleading – they suggested it was an awkward combination of Jim Henson and For Whom the Bell Tolls, but it was much more accomplished and seamless than that. It’s not a movie that could even be made in modern Hollywood, and it exposes ballyhooed product like Million Dollar Baby as overblown, sentimental claptrap. I would have liked to see it get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, not just Best Foreign. (Parenthetically, I’m sure I’m disparaging a fine film I know nothing about but I had to laugh when I heard the Canadian entry was called Water – how exciting, how colorful! Why not just call it White Bread?)

And like all great movies Pan’s Labyrinth makes you think long after you’ve left the theater. I don’t know enough about the situation, but how did Franco, alone of all the fascist dictators survive the end of the war? No doubt America’s pathological dread of communism was involved, but we let a guy with a lot of blood on his hands stay in power and die in bed. Which inevitably brings up current events – the awful villain and his fascist crew with their torture, macho posturing, bellicose religiosity and insane moral certitude masking brutal acts can’t help but remind the astute viewer of the shameful Bush/Cheney regime.

Unbelievably enough I’ve seen two good movies in a row. The Queen was excellent too, well deserving of its own Oscar nomination, and another victim of misleading reviews. They seemed to imply that it was a slight piece, memorable only for great acting. My esteem for Helen Mirren is second to no man’s, and I will cheer lustily when she picks up her Oscar, but the film itself was expertly written and directed, a penetrating portrayal of character, destiny and death. I couldn’t help wondering about current events after this one too – how did Tony Blair go from being so acute about Diana’s death to being so obtuse about Iraq?

As my devoted readers well know, I like to cavil about the decline of contemporary culture, but even I have to admit its been a good year at the movies with Little Miss Sunshine, The Departed, The Queen, and Pan’s Labyrinth not only being great, but getting the recognition they deserve. Now if your pal UBU could only get some of the same – but don’t hold your breath on that one!

Bethany: Part XI

Bethany: Part XI

Things didn’t play out the usual way after our clinch – Bethany and I didn’t go on to become one of those 24/7 couples, never more than a foot away from each other, who clotted the campus, and in fact in school we were friendly but stayed within out own rarely intersecting circles, barely acknowledging our newfound intimacy. Even on our weekly dates we’d begin as no more than affectionate lab partners, studiously exploring each other’s environments, only later moving on to continue our serious experimentation in the science of making out. We avoided the usual going out itineraries of movies and parties to alternate playing tour guide and tourist, as Bethany revealed to me her Fox Chapel and I showed her my Squirrel Hill, getting to know each other through the formative landscapes of our youth before, inevitably, becoming familiar with the still forming landscapes of each other’s bodies,

And Fox Chapel was like a foreign country to me. Even though I’d gone to school for almost four years there and cruised its lower depths with Heather, the straight side of things was as alien to me as the moon. I wasn’t used to a place that had no sidewalks and no place to walk except through the hedges to the neighbor’s for a glass of white wine or an affair, where the driveways were fancier than the roads and cars were as necessary as legs. In my neighborhood the little old ladies could pull their two wheeled carts up Murray Avenue and find all of life’s necessities, with only occasional bus trips downtown to supply the luxuries.

Bethany was just as wide eyes at all the pedestrians in Squirrel Hill, not just in the stores, but between the stores, the stores themselves not in a strip mall but right on the street, a great many with apartments above in which people (gasp) actually lived. I took her to the bookstores, newsstands and variety stores I’d haunted ever since I could walk, places with who knew what piled in bins or tacked up to the walls. And, of course, the farther down Murray you got the more yarmulkes there were, the more side curls, bagel shops, mezuzahs and kosher food signs appeared – for Bethany it was like the National Geographic. As a Hungarian Catholic she was considered somewhat exotic in Fox Chapel, but in Squirrel Hill she was just another goy

For my part, I appreciated the inevitable cruises through the Fox Chapel’s sylvan beauty, and the disingenuous street names – White Faun Lane, Hickory Hill Road, Nantucket Drive – many of them only big enough for one house, thereby doing away with the need for house numbers, which in any case seldom got into three figures. I appreciated the Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor and the Hallmark shops that were Bethany’s favorite childhood destinations, but they usual didn’t seem worth the trip, and the whole time I couldn’t help thinking that living in a suburb, wealthy or not, would quickly drive me batty.

I even dipped a reluctant toe into the world of school spirit, participating in the decoration of one of Bethany’s beloved floats in the company of several enthusiastic, giggling girls and a few forever panting nerds, but found my more creative decorative suggestions declined, if not derided.

We shared the landmarks of our brief lives, the grade schools and churches we’d both grown up in, all in all making a very sober, serious and by and large successful attempt to do exactly what I’d proposed in the beginning – to get to know each other. But there was another shadow agenda, one that emerged only in the dark when it was almost time to take Bethany home. Her caresses and kisses were fervent then, much more fervent than our mutual affection warranted, an affection that neither of us pretended was more than friendship, and I slowly realized that she was trying to provide herself with the one part of her education that she’d neglected – the physical grammar of love. In the same way she was determined to take in the parts of Pittsburgh she’d missed before leaving town for college, she seemed equally committed to losing her virginity before becoming a freshman again.
