Personal Assistant

Jeffery D. asks me to join his writing team, dangling Pam in front of my face as a "personal assistant" by way of inducement.

Given that, I can only accept and, inevitably, come up with a story about a guy in an office who slowly seduces his personal assistant, a scenario that unfolds in real life even as I’m dictating it to Pam.

Life Without Steelers

I know my binary readership isn’t all that football friendly, but there are some universal truths to be gleaned by my beloved Steelers pathetic performance last night and the sad result that they have no chance to repeat as superbowl champions —

One is that not everything you see on TV has a happy ending. That’s actually what I like about football and sports in general — what you’re going to see is a unique, totally unscripted, absolutely unpredictable spectacle in time and space with a clear winner and loser. And really it shows the subjectivity of it all – one person’s unhappy ending is another’s happy one.

As my son said, oh well, you can’t win it all every year.

So lets enjoy each and every small victory, overcome the losses and continually strive for a only fitfully achievable excellence.

And keep hoping ’till next season.

Three Small Pleasures That Are No More

The Evening Paper

Yesterday was my day off, and I spent the whole afternoon absentmindedly waiting for the thump of the evening paper, which I eventually realized was never, ever going to come again.

The Ice Cream Truck

This summer that semi-creepy ice cream truck tune was another sound I also vainly waited for. The best thing about it was the total randomness – when we heard it my whole family would stop what we were going and rush out to catch it – even if we were eating dessert at the time.

Finding Time on the Parking Meter

The city is slowly switching to a single meter station in the middle of the block. All very efficient, and folks can also use their credit cards, which relieves me of what on some days seems like my primary responsablity in the eyes of the world, giving change to the unappreciative masses. However, they’ve got it rigged so that the remaining time for the car before doesn’t carry over, thereby eliminating the ridiculously huge kick you get from finding time already on the meter.
