The Kingdoms of the Instantaneous

I came to Surrealism at an early age and hence it sometimes seems old hat to me and even a trifle jejune — but every so often I read something that reminds me how fantastic it is — definitely my favorite -ism of the 20th century…

You can be sure it is the enemies of order who are circulating this elixir of the absolute. They sneak it past the guards in the form of books, poems. The harmless pretext of literature allows them to offer this deadly brew at a price defying all competition.

Buy, buy the damnation of your soul. You will destroy yourself at last, here is the machine for capsizing your mind. I announce to the world this page one headline: a new vice has been born, one more madness has been given to man: Surrealism, son of frenzy and darkness. Step right up, here is where the kingdoms of the instantaneous begin.

– Louis Aragon, 1924

The heart of a human being can be broken and books can get old, and everything must, outwardly, die, but a power which is in no way supernatural makes of this very death the condition of renewal. It assures all exchanges ahead of time, that nothing precious may be lost within and through the obscure metamorphoses, from season to season, the butterfly regains its exalting colors.

– Andre Breton, 1945

Scared and Silent, Runaway, 13, Spent 11 Days in the Subways

Francisco said he never saw the signs. He lost sense of time. He was prepared, he said, to remain in the subway system forever.

No one spoke to him. Asked if he saw any larger meaning in that, he said, "Nobody really cares about the world and about people."

Offer

Offer

Sitting around Virginia’s dorm room with the gang, the usual rowdy bull session, and tonight I’m the biggest bull slinger of all, boasting about my prowess at cunnilingus, offering my services to all comers (so to speak) and even, I’m ashamed to say, briefly demonstrating my technique on a pair of Virginia’s tights.

But then, from out of the corner, Pam, of all people, steps forward and calls my bluff. Much hilarity ensues, and, short of going at it on the spot, there’s no much else we can do but head out of the door together.

We actually end up going for coffee, and have a great time. I’ve always basically taken Pam for granted, but tonight, lanky, commanding, sharp, she thoroughly captivates me as slowly, inexorably, joking and kidding all the way, she leads me back to her room for the fulfillment of my offer.

Punk Becomes Background Music for Commerce

They were playing "London Calling" by the Clash in the bank today, and Elvis Costello and Talking Heads in the supermarket — I guess after a certain amount of time capitalism can digest almost anything….
