‘Suspicious’ parcel: apples for Dingell

Ypsilanti Police were called to Rep. John Dingell’s office at 310 W. Michigan Ave. to investigate a suspicious package Monday afternoon, police reports said.

It turned out to be apples.

A person working in the building found the brown paper bag stapled shut and sitting outside the main office doors at about 3:50 p.m. and did not try to open it. Officers responding to the scene opened the bag and found several apples and a letter addressed to Dingell.

Crime Beat: Ypsilanti Prenatal

Pregnant woman sits down in street

Ypsilanti police arrested a pregnant woman who officers day repeatedly walked into a busy downtown street Sunday night.

Officers were called to a fight in progress near the corner of Hamilton and Pearl streets about 9:30 p.m. and found a man and a woman arguing near the intersection.

Police said the woman walked into Hamilton Street, and an officer escorted her to the sidewalk. When the officer let go, she ran back into the street, walked to the curb, and then again walked into the middle of the street and sat down.

The officer arrested the woman, who said she was three months pregnant.

She was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a precaution.

Slave to Posture

Smiling

A morning spirit of

Youthful unconscious dignity

That awes standing now

In queenly beauty

The divinest maid

Who ever trod earth

Willingly eagerly and

Not through inadvertence

A complacent prisoner

A slave to posture

Hands made fast

With red ribbon

Welcoming captivity

Her silken bondage

And glad restraint

At dawn at midday

My lady of the silver light

In darkness

The whole world fading

Into the moment supreme

Ballerina

Ballet Dancer

Strangely dateless

She who excels

Who mystifies

Who dresses to please

And gives pleasure

The gifted goddess

All the young girls

Follow

The enchantress

Of the enchanter

The crown jewel

The all in all

Shakti spirit of the way

Whose worship fulfils desire

Both a sexual partner

And the innermost

Animating soul

The infinite

Finely presented

In the form

Of a fair maiden

My lady cosmic energy

The power of composition

The signification of the word

The process inherent in cause

Spirit lover the embodiment

Of beautiful youth eternal

The very highest fruit

Of the branching universes

That appear and disappear

Every time

She blinks her eyes

Quote Bag: Dreamily Presentient

Every Teleut shaman has a spirit wife who lives in the seventh heaven, where he meets her and makes love to her during his ecstatic journeys.

– Mircea Eliade

The possession of her, the Cosmic Shakti, the living embodiment of the principle of beauty and youth eternal, is the ultimate quest, the very highest prize.

– Heinrich Zimmer

The series of universes appear and disappear with the opening and shutting of Her eyes.

– The Lalita Sahasranamam

Beauty is the infinite finitely presented.

– Friedrich Schlegel

He is not interested in the philosophical and moral ideas of the ancients, he wishes to take from antiquity those elements which will help him to build up a dream; and this dream, one feels, became for him more important than the ordinary conduct of life.

But the dream which he spun was a very sweet one, in which he could enjoy all those things which were unattainable to him in real life. Among these is the ideal of perfect love, which is expressed in a very strong erotic element throughout the book. This is usually discretely clothed in allegory, but the covering is sometimes of the thinnest and the symbolism of the most direct kind.

– Sir Anthony Blunt

The spirit of Romanticism ever sought to penetrate through the mass of sense impressions to the ultimate secret which lay buried behind these myriad perceptions and, dreamily presentient, to grasp the truth not in the trite and obvious every-day things but in the realm of the super-sensual. Animate and inanimate nature, mute in the presence of others, becomes articulate to the Romanticist. Thus spirits, elves, and fairies become quite self-evident, more self-evident indeed than are the Philistines who day after day cross the path of the Romanticists.

The fundamental concept is Novalis’s faith both in the sheer magic of poetry, which enables man to transcend his sense perceptions, and in the state of artistic ecstasy, which reveals the simple truth far more directly than any amount of thinking.

– Oskar Walzel

Crime Beat: Where’s The Love?

Man arrested after demanding hug

Ann Arbor Police say a drunken Superior Township man became disorderly when a police sergeant refused to hug him on Thursday.

Officers arrived to the area of Main and Ann streets at about 5 p.m. after people reported an intoxicated man yelling at people and walking in the streets. An officer guided the man from the middle of Ann Street, and the man said he would leave.

As he walked away, police said, the 44-year-old man approached a parked patrol car and began yelling at the officer in it. He asked the officer for a hug and swore at him for refusing, while still blocking eastbound traffic on Ann Street.

Officers arrested him and detained him at the police station until he sobered up. He refused a breathalyzer test.

Propriety

To ensure propriety

She invites me to her house

To have dinner with her

And her husband

Only guess what

Her husband’s not there

Quote Bag: E.T.A. Hoffman

If there is a malignant power that treacherously introduces a thread into our hearts, by means of which it then drags us along a dangerous, a ruinous path which we should never have trodden of our own accord, then it must become part of us, part of our own self; for only thus shall we believe it and give it the freedom of action it needs in order to carry out its secret purpose. But if our minds are firm enough and sufficiently strengthened by a happy life always to recognize alien, hostile influences and to proceed with calm steps along the path chosen by our own inclinations, the sinister power perishes in the vain attempt to create the shape that is to serve as a reflection of ourselves.

Olympia’s figure floated before him in the air, emerged from the undergrowth, and stared at him with big shining eyes out of the sparkling stream.

Caught in this maze of crime, torn by love and repugnance, by bliss and horror, I was like the damned soul whom a lovely angel, gently smiling, beckons up aloft, while Satan holds him fast with red-hot claws, and the holy angel’s loving smile, in which all the happiness of high heaven is mirrored, becomes the most agonizing of his torments.

Eugenius, whom no one noticed, no one bothered about, didn’t know what was happening to him. A wave of icy cold and then of burning heat swept through his limbs, an ineffable pain cut into his chest, and yet it seemed to him that he had never felt such a wonderful sensation. Suppose the bride now approached you, suppose you, too, pressed her to your breast? This thought, which suddenly struck him like an electric shock, appeared to him a monstrous sacrilege; yet the nameless fear that seemed to be crushing him was itself the most fervid longing, the hungriest yearning, for that which would dissolve his whole ego in annihilating pleasure-pain.

Suffice it to say that the Countess – the embodiment of love and pleasure, a woman who carried in the core of her being the art of that higher coquetry which consists in affording only a foretaste of enjoyment and so arousing and maintaining the insatiable thirst of passionate longing – systematically reduced the young man to a state of even more vehement, even more consuming desire.

— E.T.A. Hoffman

Out of Orlando

After a while in a place "where dreams come true" like Walt Disney World the question becomes – what’s real and what isn’t? Look at the WDW09 photo show to the right. Is that a real tiger or animatronic? How about those gators? Is that the sky or a painting? Are we in Brooklyn or Orlando? Is this the plane ride home or just another ride? When I could see my breath again I knew it was really over…
