Philipp Vandenberg’s Mysteries of the Oracles: The Last Secrets of Antiquity

It’s been well documented here on RADIOFREEUBU that I have an abiding interest in the subject of ancient oracles. So when Philipp Vandenberg’s Mysteries of the Oracles: The Last Secrets of Antiquity showed up on the publisher VHPS’s forthcoming list you can bet I ordered it. I love the fact that even after all this time and all the people who were exposed to them the secrets of the oracles have remained veiled to an extent unimaginable in the contemporary world in which everything is so relentlessly exposed. The oracles were a place where human and divine confronted each other directly, again an impossibility today where vast bureaucracies have been erected simply to obscure and defuse the numinous. The sites of the oracles were truly significant locations, and it’s no wonder that the Omphalos, that mysterious egg shaped rock the Greeks considered to be the naval of the world was located at Delphi.

Those are just a few of the reasons that it’s always interesting to read about oracles and Mysteries of the Oracles is no exception. That said, it’s not a terribly profound or original work, and Vandenberg’s attempts to "solve" the secrets of antiquity mostly fall flat. I’m not sure by what circuitous route it came to be published by VHPS, but since it originally appeared in 1982, a lot of the much touted cutting edge archeology has been superceded. I’m also at a loss to understand why in all that time someone couldn’t have cleared up the overabundance of typos. It remains, however, a remarkably broad and readable tour through the ancient oracular world with a lot of interesting anecdotes about divination and classical times in general.

Here’s a few of my favorite passages as well as a killer bit from Virgil that’s included in the book:

While living in caves and swallowing the dry, driven desert sand, I witnessed discoveries that robbed me of sleep at night.

The black lumps of hashish that Dakaris discovered by the sackful leave no doubt that clients of the oracle were drugged into an incubatio, a kind of temple sleep, so they could experience the dreams and revelations that they should while close to the dead and the divine forces.

Knowledge that lies outside the range of understanding can only be gained in a state that also lies outside this range. Ecstasy, madness, frenzy, or whatever this state might be called, was the precondition for the Pythia’s prophecies.

Polycleitus also built the Tholos, a harmonious, round building whose significance is still uncertain today. It was probably used for secret rites, for it is supposed to have been erected over the tomb of the mortal mother of Asclepius. Here the priests bred the light-brown snakes that were sacred to Asclepius.

Some seventy miraculous cures during dreams were recorded. There was a Messian woman who was unable to have a child, so she came to Epidaurus for sleep treatments in the abaton. In a dream Aclepius appeared with a snake which he placed in her bed. Instead of being horrified, however, she played teasing games with it while she slept. That very year she had twins.

– from Mysteries of the Oracles by Philipp Vandenberg

There’s a huge cavern hollowed out

From the flank of Cumae’s hill,

A hundred wide approaches it has,

A hundred mouths from which

The Sibyl’s answers come forth

In a hundred rushing voices.

They had reached the threshold

When the maid cried: The time

Has come to ask your destiny!

Look, the God! The God is here!

And as she spoke these words

Before the threshold her face and

Features were suddenly changed,

Her hair fell in disarray,

She appeared taller and

Spoke in no mortal tones,

For the God was with her and

His breath was close upon her.

Crime Beat: Attend Your Salad!

Unattended salad prompts courthouse alert

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

By Gabrielle Banks, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A salad left unattended in a bag under a restroom sink prompted the closing of the Grant Street entrance to the Allegheny County Courthouse and the evacuation of county Chief Executive Dan Onorato’s office for about an hour this afternoon.

Bomb sniffing dogs were sent into the ladies room after a paper bag was spotted about 1:20 p.m.

Officials said a salad was found in the bag, and the alert was lifted by 2:20 p.m.

Quote Bag: Pose: Poetry and Prose

It seemed to him that he was living in many different worlds at the same time. Each of them was equally true.

I might forget you eventually, but I’ll never forget your body.

– from Depths by Henning Mankell

The small studio was beautiful and I shall always carry it in my thoughts. It was mysterious and holy, due to something – what I might best call our youth. A hallowed afternoon hung suspended there, golden flakes in the warm mist of cigarette smoke when footsteps sounded outside and a woman entered –

– from “The Dream of the Silver Eaves” by Paul Leppin

This fire, like the eye of a gordian snake,
Bewitch’d me towards; and I soon was near
A sight too fearful for the feel of fear.
In thicket hid I curs’d the haggard scene –
The banquet of my arms, my arbor queen.
Seated upon an uptorn forest root;
And all around her shapes, wizard and brute,
Laughing, and wailing, groveling, serpenting,
Showing tooth, tusk, and venom bag, and sting!

– from “Endymion: A Poetic Romance” by John Keats

Cold eyelids that hide like a jewel
Hard eyes that grow soft for an hour;
The heavy white limbs, and the cruel
Red mouth like a venomous flower…

All thine the new wine of desire
The fruit of four lips as they clung
Til the hair and the eyelids took fire,
The foam of a serpentine tongue,
The froth of the serpents of pleasure,
More salt than the foam of the sea.
What ailed us, O gods, to desert you
For creeds that refuse and restrain?

– from “Dolores” by Algernon Charles Swinburne

Starling Electric and the Brian Jones T-shirt

Ever since I had a minor (but painful) health problem a while back I’ve tried to be more aware of what I eat. My pet bugaboo has been high fructose corn syrup, the sweetener they pump into almost every processed food on the face of the earth. Avoiding it is what led me to Arbor Farms Market, our locally owned and operated health food supermarket – at the Kroger you have to search for something that doesn’t have HFCS, but at the Farms it’s hard to find anything that does. I’ve come to love the Farms and my weekly visit there. The store is pleasant and uncrowded, the employees uniformly nice and uncorporate, and even the music is fantastic, modern classics like Dylan and Van Morrison. The whole establishment seems to me to be a very workable compromise between idealism and commerce, gracefully poised beside the unhealthy consumer madness of a chain grocery store and the uncomfortable, smugly ostentatious virtue of food co-ops and other greener than thou food providers. Sure, I still go to Kroger once a week for more modern and more ambiguous kicks – like the self serve checkout, which is somehow less dehumanizing than facing the Kroger cashiers.

So there I was at the Farms on my day off, in the first aisle, when one of the employees, a guy who’d rung me up a few times, sidled over and said Is that a Brian Jones t-shirt? And indeed it was – I tend to wear it on my days off to avoid endlessly explaining to my less than hip customers who Brian Jones was. Yeah, you don’t see these every day I said. I got it off e-bay. I even admitted to having a couple of others. I think he said cool or something like that and I mentioned the Brian Jones movie Stoned (which I own but have yet to watch) which he knew about.

I’d noticed this guy before, a rocker in a sort of intellectual way, skinny with glasses and shoulder length hair, and noted his very fitting name Caleb. I think the first time he really stood out to me it was because he was wearing nail polish. But I admit I hadn’t really focused on him because of the distraction of his fellow cashier, quietly beautiful and genuinely sweet, the graceful mistress of the zen arts of packing a grocery bag (think it’s easy? Try it – I’m hopeless) and having meaningful thirty second conversations with people while giving them their change (she’s also a lot better at this than I am). If I ever make a list of the most enchanting women of my city she will be very near the top. But I digress…

I went home, feeling part of a secret, hip society recognized by t-shirt, not thinking much about it until I opened the paper later that week to see a picture of a rock band with my fellow Brian Jones fan in the middle. Look I shouted frantically to my wife It’s that guy from the supermarket!

She recognized him too, and indeed there he was Caleb last name Dillon, the leading light of a group called Starling Electric which was opening for a hyped local band at the very same local rock bar where Nirvana had played a legendary early gig. Caleb was all decked out in a Woodstock rock star sort of way and looked quite a bit more hip than when wearing an apron. I decided to see if I could hear some Starling Electric music.

I started at their my space page: http://www.myspace.com/starlingelectric

Now usually when I hear a band that has someone I know in it like, say, Mark Maynard’s Monkey Power Trio, they’re not quite as bad as I feared, but not anything I’d ever want to listen to again – Starling Electric on the other hand blew me away and I’ve been listening to them ever since. The first thing that hit me was simply their sound. It’s very nuanced and complex, bringing to mind a host of sixties bands like Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd, psychedelic era Beach Boys, The Byrds, or even Skip Spence’s immortal Oar, while retaining its own integrity. These influences are the same as those of the "Paisley Underground" bands of the eighties that I liked, such as Rain Parade, Plasticland and Dream Syndicate, and Starling Electric synthesizes the sound as well as any of them. Whoa!

I was able to download their album Clouded Staircase from I-tunes, and started to hear some of the great songs under the sound. I suppose the obvious one is Camp-fire, which in a better world would already be a top ten hit, but in my initial listenings I’ve also been impressed by A Snowflake and the killer riff of British Boots. Who’d have thought all this would come of a chance encounter in the bread aisle?

Of course I’ve heard fantastic local bands – specifically the awesome Ronald Koal and the Trillionaires in Columbus or our own ultra-talented George Bedard – that never went anywhere in the larger scheme, but, to paraphrase Janis Joplin, if you can make good music one time for one person, well, that’s all that really matters.

On Monday, wearing Brian Jones t-shirt number two, I kept my eyes open for Caleb at the Farms to tell him how much I dug his groove in a (hopefully) unembarrassing way, but even though I spotted him when I came in, he was gone by the time my cart and I made the circuit – oh, well, maybe next week in Brian Jones shirt #3 – in the meantime I’m still rocking out to Starling Electric.

Crime Beat: State of Illusion

Crime Beat: State of Illusion

U-M burglary report turns out to be false

University of Michigan Police say a burglary reported Saturday evening at the Alice Lloyd residence hall wasn’t a burglary after all.

Diane Brown, a campus police spokeswoman, said that police learned through additional interviews that two men seen on the roof of the residence hall actually live there.

In a campus-wide crime bulletin, police said a witness saw two men on the roof at about 8:10 p.m. Saturday and called to them as they tried to get into a window. The witness told police the men crawled through another window after two other men opened it for them. Nothing was reported missing.

But Brown said at least two of the men who claimed to be victims of the burglary live in the dorm and later admitted they were scared when the witness yelled at them. Police may forward the case to prosecutors to review for charges of filing a false police report.

A crime alert issued early Sunday was canceled.

Fake gravestone returned to Jaycees

Ypsilanti police said a mysterious marble gravestone discovered in the 200 block of East Michigan Avenue earlier this month turned out not to be real.

The gravestone, with the name John King, who was supposedly born Nov. 28, 1936, and died Nov. 5, 1997, turned out to be a prop that had been used in a "haunted trailer" attraction sponsored by a Jaycees group. Police had been checking local cemeteries to find where the gravestone belonged.

The fake gravestone was returned to the Jaycees.

Remy de Gourmont

Thanks to the indulgence of Comcast internet connectivity has been restored so RadioFreeUBU will now resume regular programming…

Remy de Gourmont (1858 – 1915) was one of those writers who were very influential in their time, but have been largely obscured today, especially in the English speaking world. A semi-recluse for the last half of his life due to a disfiguring case of lupus, Gourmont was a powerful and mysterious figure among the avant garde tastemakers of his day. T. S. Eliot and the American modernists were very influenced by his essays on art and aesthetics, but he also produced novels, decadent in that delicious, sensuous French way. Here’s some passages from the only one I could get my hands on, the brilliant and subtle Dream of a Woman:

Why have we not the right to be gods, to play with sensations at the bottom of the vale, beneath great prehistoric masonry?

As her silhouette grew clearer in the shadow, Adelaide surprised me by her noble attitude and her pure lines.

She was waiting for me like a woman in a picture. Last night was the third of our nights, mute and Babylonian.

And she gave herself to my staring eyes.

I am trying to express in one word the mingling of tones that stream across the flesh – the rosy ivory of the skin enlivened by the blue reflection of the willow, the little violet shadows that roll along the muscles, the wide medallions of golden sunlight falling over the shoulders where they seem to leap up again as from the vermillion water on the arms and knees, and mount again in sparks toward the belly where a somber crescent swallows them; the breasts beneath this path of light appear more alive and more free; changing their form with every movement of the body, they remain every pure: they are like great flowers with purple and amber hearts, like galley prows spotted with the blood of murders!

Mutual attraction moves rapidly when the hour of separation is known.

Madam

Madam

I’m standing in a crowd, waiting to cross the street. There aren’t any cars coming so a family steps off the curb, but the moment they do this greasy, long haired street preacher type starts bellowing Don’t walk, it says! Don’t Walk! That means you ain’t supposed to walk!

Being me, I’m contrarian enough to cross anyway, and the guy is furious, following me and shouting in my ear. I try to lose him, cutting across campus and ducking into a large, official looking house. It’s unlocked, empty except for a few stray pieces of furniture wrapped in plastic, evidently in the process of being redecorated.

An attractive and professional woman in her late thirties or early forties comes in and I apologize and explain my situation. She’s very understanding and friendly and shows me through the house, explaining the design plans.

We really hit it off and she invites me back to see the progress. I begin visiting regularly, dropping in when I’m in the neighborhood, eventually realizing that rather than a bed and breakfast as I’d thought, the house is going to become a bordello, and my friend the madam. I witness the whole process, the decorating and the hiring of the girls, helping whenever I can..

On opening night the woman says You’ve been such a good friend. I want to give you a freebie, on the house. You can pick any of the girls you like.

Oh, come on, I say. You know who I want.

Crime Beat: Cell Phones on Ice

Nothing stolen, just rearranged

An Ann Arbor couple told police their home was broken into and several items were rearranged but not stolen, reports said.

Officers responded to the home in the 1400 block of Wisteria Drive early Sunday morning after the homeowners discovered all the kitchen cabinet doors open and items rearranged.

They also found their cell phones in the refrigerator. The homeowner told police she and her husband went to bed at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and heard a loud noise about an hour later but did not check it out before falling asleep.

The sliding glass door appeared to be tampered with.

Katie: Part Five

Katie: Part Five

"Pan?" Katie seemed to become alert for the first time. Since Pan didn’t go to our school, most people had a hard time categorizing him as anything other than some variety of weirdo, a weirdo, however, with enough of an underground reputation to make them wonder if maybe they weren’t missing something.

"Yeah, full moon," I said with exaggerated cool. "You know Pan’ll be having a party."

"But isn’t he, I mean, doesn’t he live…" She wasn’t really sure where he lived, or much else about him. There were so many stories and confabulations about Pan that even I, who knew him better than most, had a hard time separating the B.S. from the frequently equally improbable reality.

"Near New Kensington. It’s not that far, we’re practically half way there already.."

"Pan." As she considered her eyes narrowed to near invisibility. Katie was brave but not especially adventurous – she probably would have rejected the idea of going to Pan’s out of hand if boyfriend Bill weren’t back there in a bedroom feverishly consoling himself with Ungie.

"Come on, it’s better than starting a fight. Somebody might get hurt."

"I wish." She slowly uncrossed her legs and hopped off the table, standing there, rolling up one sleeve of her yellow button down shirt, not speaking again until she’d started rolling up the other. "Listen, you’re not like, thinking that I’m going to go for some kind of revenge screw type thing, are you? Because you can just get that out of your head, I can tell you right now it’s not ever going to happen." She’d obviously heard the word orgy applied to Pan’s parties.

"Hah, yeah, thanks a lot, Katie," I said. "But, really, that didn’t enter my mind, not that you’re not hot and everything. I just thought you might, you know, want to get your mind off things, try something different. I’m going over there anyway, so I’m just saying, if you want to come along…"

She swayed slightly, the way she did before the 440, tensing one leg and then the other. "This isn’t going to be some kind of drug thing, is it?"

"No! Well, yes, but nobody’s going to make you. I mean, there’ll be a keg there too."

I think that was what clinched it. Like many of the athletic crowd, Katie considered beer the one controlled substance whose consumption didn’t entail breaking training, and this party was only offering downers and a murky punch made by the indiscriminate mixture of everything in the parental liquor cabinet.

"Oh, all right." She looked back at the house regretfully, no doubt picturing the effect of one good right to Ungie’s pasty face. "But we’re taking two cars."

Well, UBUFANS, I’m making a little jaunt northways to the big island to commune with the Great Spirit and watch fireworks, so there won’t be another broadcast from RADIOFREEUBU for a week…why not take your own tour through the now extensive archives and have a refresher dose of UBUANITY ? And go ahead and celebrate independence any way you like….

TILL THEN,
