Smile (to Laura Riding)

I can never get your smile
Because I can never understand
How you can be as happy
As that smile

Since I now know
The Philosopher was right,
That pain is the only positive
And pleasure just the novelty
of its absence

Still it’s not you I see
But that smile so perfect –
Not you but you
Imperfectly smiling
