We don’t even rightly know whether our acts improve or degrade the situation on earth (our acts’ consequences are mostly unintended), so there’s no way to behave well, not to mention that, looked at scientifically, people are probably puppets of the mechanistic universe; we don’t even control what we do. That was my view, but what I resented was the implication that I was advocating it, that I was waving it like a flag. I wasn’t; I was suffering from it. I felt like I hadn’t chosen this condition, but that I couldn’t see my way out of it. Except through sex, drugs and art.
