The Arrow

Print made by Léon Davent
After Francesco Primaticcio
Date 1540-1545

The British Museum

Pricked to the quick by conscience,

And loathing my little worth,

I know of no art or proper science

That might keep me from self-hurt,

This grief so sharp, so oddly angry

I cower at every blow of hope.

If only, out of pity, she would play

My dittany, Artemis to my Stag,

And wrench the arrow from this wound

That bathes my burning pain in blood.

— Maurice Sceve, translated by Richard Sieburth

Female Ghost

Kawanabe Kyōsai, Female Ghost, a hanging scroll painting

Japan
Meiji era, about AD 1871-89

As a boy of eight, Kyosai is said to have fished a severed head from the river and taken it home to draw. In this painting we can almost hear the female ghost shrieking in triumph as she bears off the severed head. Cutting off a defeated enemy’s head was the ultimate sign of victory in battle, but here, she even has blood dripping from her gaping fangs: the unthinkable suggestion is that she has actually bitten off this head.

When Jesus descended into Hell, the sinners listened to his words and were all saved. But the saints, believing as usual that they were being put to the test, rejected his words and were all damned.
