Mary is believed to have lived her last years here and was buried here by the Apostles. The sacred place of Virgin Mary remained secret for a very long time until a German nun, by the name of Catherine Emmerich, showed it 1890 relying on her dream. Panaghia Kapoulou which is declared as the place of pilgrimage by Vatican, attained still greater importance upon the visit of the Pope.
